From Forest to Sea: The Story of Amber

Amber begins with a wound.

Millions of years before humans walked the Earth, before pine needles had evolved, ancient conifer forests released resin in response to injury. Over vast stretches of time, that resin transformed into amber, a golden time capsule carrying traces of ancient sunlight, prehistoric ecosystems, and lives long vanished from memory. Carried by water and weather, Baltic amber continues to wash ashore today, linking deep geological time with generations of human stories.

This exhibition explores amber as both material and metaphor. Through sculpture, sand art, and mythological imagery, it traces a journey from ancient forest to modern shoreline, revealing the ways landscapes carry memory across time. Central to the work are feminine figures inspired by the Baltic concept of māte, spiritual guardians and personifications of the natural world. These beings exist at the threshold between land and sea, ancestry and imagination, reminding us that we both shape and are shaped by the environments from which we emerge.

The exhibition also draws from the Baltic legend of Jūratė, the sea goddess whose amber palace was shattered after she fell in love with a mortal. According to folklore, the amber found along Baltic shores today are fragments of that palace and tears shed in grief. In this telling, amber becomes both a record of loss and a symbol of resilience. It is ancient sunlight carried through darkness and returned to the world.

In this exhibition, Baltic amber meets Icelandic sand, seawater, and mythological traditions, allowing two northern shorelines to speak to one another across distance. Alongside the sculptures, ephemeral installations of Icelandic sand and amber invite reflection on impermanence, transformation, and return. Created from materials gathered at the shoreline and ultimately returned to the sea, these works echo the journey of amber itself. Weathered ceramic figures and copper patinated with Icelandic seawater emerge from these temporary landscapes, embodying forms shaped by time that nevertheless remain enduringly themselves.

In Baltic tradition, it is said that one may offer sorrow into the path of light cast across the sea at sunset, entrusting it to the sun as it descends below the horizon. Through the night, those burdens are carried away and transformed, returning with the dawn as something lighter. From Forest to Sea invites visitors to encounter amber in much the same way: as a vessel of memory, grief, healing, and hope, carrying the light of an ancient world into the present.

Fjara — The Foreshore. the tidal margin where the North Atlantic gives and takes.

Wall-mounted relief in clay and sea-weathered copper, hand-built by River Reishi.
